The treatment depends on what type of cancer, how far it’s spread, the grade of cancer, and how the disease has affected your overall health. Some common treatment modalities are:
Surgery
Bladder cancer often is treated with surgery. Depending on the cancer stage, it can involve anything from the removal of the tumor to an entire bladder reconstruction.
a) Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT):
Often used for early-stage bladder cancers, it is a minimally invasive process followed by intravesical therapy to prevent recurrence.
Tumors that occur in the bladder lining are removed by a surgeon who passes a cystoscope through the urethra.
b) Radical Cystectomy:
For advanced cancers, the entire bladder is removed.
In men, it generally means removing the prostate and seminal vesicles.
It may include removing the uterus, the ovaries, and sometimes the vaginal wall in women.
c) Bladder Reconstruction (Urinary Diversion):
Once a radical cystectomy, surgeons create a new way for a person’s body to store and pass urine, often a urostomy or a neobladder.
Chemotherapy
For early-stage cancers, they are given intravesical chemotherapy, chemotherapy directly into the bladder.
Cancers at advanced stages are treated with systemic chemotherapy.
Radiation Therapy
Many people use it as a way to stop the tumor’s growth when they don’t qualify for surgery.
Immunotherapy
It is designed to start the immune system fighting cancer cells. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy is the most common therapy for bladder cancer.
